Mission
To strengthen the nonprofit sector of Flint and Genesee County by providing
capacity building support and technical assistance.

Vision

Funders, nonprofits and technical assistance providers will work collaboratively in a learning community.  They will demonstrate adaptive capacity individually, within their respective organizations and sub-sectors, and as a collaborative whole system.  Benchmarks of excellence will include sustainable organizations whose missions are in alignment with community needs; consultants and other technical assistance providers whose expertise, diversity and understanding of the local community ensures customized, effective technical assistance; and, funders who work in concert to deliver integrated, comprehensive support for sustaining critical community needs.

Since the launch of the Pilot Project in 2003, the BEST Project has served over seventy Genesee County nonprofit organizations.  More than thirty of these agencies participated in a comprehensive, three year assessment and capacity building program (see Cohort Model description).  The most recent group of agencies to participate in this program, the Third Cohort, will complete their capacity building projects in late 2011/early 2012.

Following a review of all evaluation data and a January 2011 BEST Planning Retreat, staff recommended a shift in the current service delivery model—namely, serving more agencies with “right sized” technical assistance and capacity building including assessment and professional development.  All Genesee County 501(c)3 organizations are eligible to apply for BEST programs and services.  Other organizations and groups are encouraged to contact the BEST Office to discuss program eligibility.  Any Genesee County individual or group can attend BEST Professional Development and Events offerings.

Beginning in September 2011, the BEST Project will provide a variety of organizational development services to Genesee County nonprofit organizations including:
